East Or West – Home Is Best

Everybody has a small homeland, for me it is the town of Leninsk. In the 13th century our territory was a “tasty piece” for conquerors because of its rich natural resourses; besides, it was on a trade route to India and China. No wonder, soon our region was conquerred by Mongolian tribes. The Volgograd region was part of the Golden Horde and 15 km from Leninsk, the capital of Golden Horde, the city of Shed-Berke, with approximately 100 thousand people, was founded.

After the disintegration of the Golden Horde the territory was deserted for a long time. In 1773, under a decree of Ekaterina II, 1300 families which founded several villages, including Prishib (the name of Leninsk before the revolution) had moved here. This resettlement had been connected with manufacturing silk fabrics, and also with the development of the salt industry near Lake Elton. So many years passed... During the Great Patriotic War Leninsk overcame this difficult period. Libraries, schools and shops had been turned into hospitals; people built a railway. So, our town did much for the victory in Stalingrad.

After the Great Patriotic War, Leninsk began to develop itself. This process is still going on.

Leninsk borders the Volgo-Akhtubinskaya poima – a unique natural area. In the poima, people rest from routine: they fish, hunt, swim and picnic. People from other cities also have rest here.

A lot of houses in Leninsk were built not so long ago, but there are some that were built before the revolution. These are the houses of famous merchants. They are very beautiful. These buildings are now used by different organisations: a children’s centre, the bank, the town administration. You can see them in the photos.

I study at School No. 1 – the oldest in our town (built in 1918). My school has good traditions: it has a museum with many exhibits, a monument to the teachers and the pupils who died during the Great Patriotic War, the best schoolyard in the Volgograd region which has a lot of trees and flowers. School No. 1 has received a lot of grants for winning in many competitions and I am happy to study at this school.

To sum it up, I am proud of our region, because it has both wonderful nature, beautiful architecture, and a rich history. I agree with the famous proverb: “East or West – Home Is Best!”
