Приведу пример такой работы при обсуждении статьи “City prepares for annual spring cleaning” by Natalie Cooper в газете The Moscow News (2008. № 13).

“In the Soviet days, subbotniki … usually coincided with national spring holidays”

The winter weather has finally relented, shedding its grey smoggy cloak in favor of clear, sunny skies. Climate change in Moscow corresponds with an annual rite of spring, which sees thousands of volunteers and workers teaming together to put the shine back into the city after the long winter.

According to the city’s department of communal services, this year’s traditional spring subbotniki, or volunteer clean-ups, are set to take place in Moscow on April 12 and 19, which are both Saturdays. “The subbotniki are planned for the middle of spring, as usual,”the department reported. “City-dwellers will be informed beforehand so that they have the possibility of participating in the spring clean-up of courtyards and squares.”

Residents can obtain all the necessary materials, including paint, from their district council or residential organizations. But not everybody is optimistic about the efforts.

“I’m not sure I agree with my area’s idea of clean-up,” says Olga Chernova, the young resident of the Patriarch’s Ponds district of Moscow. “As I was walking down Tverskaya, I could see workers simply painting over the old rusty, dirty, chipped-off paint without even cleaning it!”

As well as picking up litter, it is also traditional to plant trees and bushes during spring subbotniki. House fronts will be hosed down to remove months of winter dirt, allowing the city to breathe in the new fresh air.

The city department for the protection of the environment has even encouraged Moscow residents to decorate their “concrete jungles” with flowers by participating in a competition entitled “Flowers at home” (Tsvety u doma) which will be running from May 19 to September 12. The competition’s jury will be judging the flower arrangements on the fronts of residential buildings, house entrances and courtyards.

Russian spring has a way of unpredictably turning into summer. Before one has time to enjoy a walk about town in a lighter coat, the sweltering weather is already upon us, leaving us to stew in stuffy offices whose air-conditioning systems have a tendency to break down. Such thoughts naturally bring to mind a cold plunge in some clean water.

It is for this reason that the Moscow authorities are already making preparations for summer swimming around the city. “A program is already underway to guarantee the safety of the water for 2008,” announced the city administration. From April 30 to May 10 all bodies of water around the capital will be subjected to a thorough analysis. The city administration assures that the sanitary state of the water will be regularly monitored throughout the season to sanitary norms. Popular swimming spots in the capital include Bukhta Tikhaya in Pirogovo, as well as the Serebryany Bor beaches 2 and 3.

In the early days of the Soviet Union, subbotniki were days of volunteer labour and usually coincided with national spring holidays. Vladimir Lenin, who liked the idea of Communism which the practice embodied, participated in the first subbotnik, held on May 1, 1920. They soon became obligatory political events until the fall of the Soviet Union.

“Now they are not obligatory, of course,” said a spokesman for the city’s communal services complex. “People have the freedom to attend or not attend.” An estimated 650 Muscovites took part in last year’s subbotnik.

– How does the title relate to the article?

– What did you expect to find in it?

– In what context do you expect to find the following words?

volunteer clean-ups – work without payment;

city-dwellers – city residents;

“concrete jungle” – buildings, blocks of flats;

district council – local authorities;

obligatory political events – required participation in a happening concerning politics and government;

regularly monitored – constantly supervised.

I. Look at the first part of the text to find the answers:

– What is the spring clean-up called?

– Who participates in the subbotnik?

– Who organizes the volunteer clean-ups?

– What does subbotnik mean?

II. Go through the choices and choose the answer that best fits:

1. Why is it necessary to wash off winter’s grime?

a) because it coincides with national spring holidays;

b) because it harms the environment;

c) because it’s an annual rite of spring;

d) to put the shine back into the city.

2. Why aren’t many residents optimistic about the effort?

a) they find it useless;

b) they think the city authorities spend lots of money;

c) the residents have to take part in subbot-nik;

d) they’re not sure that’s a good idea.

3. What kinds of work can be done for subbotnik?

a) cleaning up courtyards and squares;

b) hosing down house fronts;

c) picking up litter and planting trees and bushes;

d) a competition to decorate balconies.

III. Match the prompts from each column to make sentences.

1. This year, subbotnikia. usually coincided with national spring holidays
2. As well as picking up litterb. turning into summer
3. Thousands of volunteersc. are set to take part in Moscow on April 12 and 19
4. Russian spring has a way of unpredictablyd. it is also traditional to plant trees and bushes
5. In early days of the Soviet Union subbotniki were days of volunteer work whiche. to decorate their “concrete jungles” with flowers.
6. The city department encouraged Moscow residentsf. teaming together to put the shine back into the city after the long winter.

I. Underline the words that best describe this event.

II. Write the best advertisement for spring volunteer clean-ups.

III. List two points of view about subbotniki:

e.g.

In favour ofAgainst
– have a choice to participate or not– spend your free time your own way
– washing off the winter’s grime– it’s not paid
– paint fences, house fronts– can catch a cold
– plant trees and bushes
– pick up litter
– gather leaves
– decorate with flowers
