Teacher: Hello. Glad to see you. How are you? Look at the blackboard, please. (На доске написана фраза: Be careful what you say or do when you visit the animals in the zoo.)

Teacher: Why should people be careful?

Pupil 1: Some animals are dangerous.

Pupil 2: Some animals are wild and aggressive.

Pupil 3: Some animals are big, others are small.

Teacher: You are more than right. Do you know the animals well?

Pupils: Yes, we do.

Teacher: Let us have a guessing game. The task is to name the animal described by your classmate. Are you ready? Can we start? Please, be very attentive, we shall check your answers on the screen.

Pupil 1: It is long and green. It can be very terrible and aggressive. It likes to eat meat and fish. It is very wild. It lives in the water. What is it? (a crocodile)

Teacher: You can check your answers, looking at the screen.

Pupil 7: This animal is very unusual. It cannot walk, it cannot run, it cannot fly, it can only jump. It has a front pocket and in the pocket it carries a baby. It lives in Australia. Name this animal. (a kangaroo) (слайд 7)

Teacher: Thank you. Good work. I see, that you know the animals very well and we can speak about them for a long time. They live all around us, but if you want to see exotic animals you should go to the zoo. Am I right? There are many zoos in the world, but we shall speak about London Zoo today.

So we start. Imagine yourselves in London. (Фото Лондона – слайд 8) Tell me, please, what London is famous for? May be you know some places of interest. Remind me of them, because I forgot.

Pupil 1: London is famous for Big Ben.

Pupil 2: London is famous for Buckingham Palace.

Pupil 3: London is famous for Westminster Abbey.

Pupil 4: London is famous for parks.

Teacher: You are more than right. Could you please name these parks.

Pupil 5: They are Hyde Park, Regent’s Park and others.

Teacher: What is Regent’s Park famous for?

Pupil 6: It is famous for the London Zoo.

Teacher: Thank you for the answer. You will see the years on the screen now and I want you to say what you associate with these years.

Pupil 1: 1826 – The Zoological Society of London was founded.

Pupil 2: 1828 – A collection of animals was opened in Regent’s Park.

Pupil 3: 1830s – The collection of animals was greatly enlarged with the addition of the royal menagerie from Windsor and the animals from the Tower of London.

Pupil 4: 1839 – The first giraffes appeared in the Zoo.

Pupil 5: 1850 – In this year the Tsar of Russia presented two bison to the Zoo.

Pupil 6: 1874 – In this year the first baby hippopotamus was reared.

Pupil 7: 1880 – In this year the first koala bear arrived to live outside Australia.

Teacher: I see that you really know the history of the zoo. Now it is time to speak about the animals that you take care of.

Pupil 1: The giraffe lives in Africa. It is an exotic animal. This is the tallest animal in the world. It can be 6 or 7 meters high. The giraffe can see very well. It has small horns on the head. They are usually yellow with brown spots. It is important for giraffes to have good hearing to identify predators. These animals like to eat acacia very much. They are very generous and kind. I like them very much. We feed giraffes with acacia branches and bring them water. We also take care of baby giraffes, they are very funny.

Pupil 2: Snakes are reptiles. They are different from mammals, because their blood is cold. Without the warm rays of sunlight, they can’t warm themselves. Snakes are reptiles without feet. Some snakes kill their prey with the help of poison. Snakes lay eggs in shallow dimples, fill them up with soil and leave the place. Babies must take care of themselves. The University of Tennessee has studied two-headed snakes and every time the heads were very independent, they even fought for food. Sometimes the heads become so very aggressive they can even try to eat each other. Two-headed snakes also have many problems deciding which direction to go. That is because one head wants to turn left while the other wants to turn right.

Pupil 3: An elephant is the largest animal that lives on land. Elephants have larger ears than any other animal and their tusks are the largest teeth. An elephant’s nose is called a trunk. A lot of things can be done with the help of a trunk. An elephant is a nice animal, strong and friendly. It eats vegetation that is grass, and green leaves (about 300–400 kilos a day) and elephants can drink 150–200 liters of water. They are very playful in the water and wonderful swimmers. The elephant is probably the most intelligent animal next to the dog and it has a very good memory.

Pupil 4: Dolphins are very intelligent. They love to play with people. They can be of different colors – black and white, blue and light blue. Most dolphins eat fish. Their brain is very big. They have a very good feeling to be helpful. They have a very good experience of communicating with people. They give birth to their babies, which are born with opened eyes, under the water, close to the surface. They can perform for children and grown-ups: dolphins can jump out of the water, play with a ball, roll over, dance and perform many other tricks. I want to ride on the back of a dolphin one day.

Pupil 5: Eagles are very proud birds. Their feathers are of different colors. They live high up in nests and eat meat. Eagles have great claws. People learned to tame them and to take care of them. In the zoo we learn to tame these birds. We feed the birds with meat. It is very interesting.

Pupil 6: Squirrels are very funny, quick animals, with a fluffy tail and small brushes on their ears. They are beautiful, skillful and nice. Squirrels live in trees hollows. When it is daytime, squirrels jump and run on the branches of trees. They are very active and energetic, but when the sun sets, they go home and don’t come out again until the sun rises in the morning. What do they like to eat? Of course their favorite foods are mushrooms, berries, pine nuts; they also like to eat carrots, corn, seeds and nuts. In the Zoo they become tame, playful and they are not afraid of people; squirrels can take food from people’s hands.

Pupil 7: Parrots. Their homeland is Australia and the tropics. They are big bullies, but they are also funny birds. Birds are the most numerous of the earth’s animals for scientists have estimated that there may be over 100.000 million birds in the world altogether. Birds come all in different sizes and colors. There are a great many birds, that can be taught to say a few words. But the real talking birds can be taught to say long sentences. The best talking birds are parrots. Many people believe that the ability to talk depends on the structure of a bird’s tongue. Most biologists believe that birds do not understand the words they say. I myself admire parrots, and teach them to talk.

Teacher: Thank you very much my dear children. Your information is really interesting and useful. You have worked well and I think we should have a small rest. In other words, let us play a game. You will be my animals and I will be your trainer. Remember, that you are clever, intelligent, obedient and strongly disciplined animals. You should do everything I tell you to do. Are you ready? We start.

Teacher: Please stand up. Please run. Please jump. Please fly. Please swim. Please sing a song.

А dog, a cat, a rabbit. (3 times)
A can run and jump and skip.
A cat and a rabbit, a cat and a rabbit can run and jump and skip. (2 times)

Teacher: I am happy to have such animals. It was a pleasure. Let’s return to our topic. We were speaking about animals in Regent’s Park. I am sure there are many other exotic animals there. As you know thousands of visitors come to the Zoo every week. Now I want you to answer my questions. Why do people need Zoos? What is good about them?

Pupil 1: People can see different animals there.

Pupil 2: People can feed the exotic animals and watch the young babies grow up.

Pupil 3: People learn new things about nature.

Pupil 4: Zoo lovers can study animals in their cages.

Pupil 5: It is very enjoyable. People can find new friends.

Pupil 6: We can study the effects that human activities have on the natural world.

Teacher: Right you are. I shall speak Russian.

Good-bye. Have a good time.
