There are also other kinds of maps. A road map can help you plan an automobile trip. A relief map shows you what the land in an area looks like with mountains, valleys, and bodies of water.

1. Angela is a schoolgirl from Brighton. She wants to be a doctor. She is going to medical school next year. It’s a long course – about six years – but she is going to work very hard. She thinks that it’s a difficult job, but she likes working with people. She says that later she would like to specialize and perhaps be a paediatrician. “I love children, and looking after them would be wonderful.”

2. Deena is doing Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths “A” levels and will sit the exams next summer. “I’d like to train as a dentist when I’ve finished college. I want to do something medically orientated and chose dentistry because there aren’t so many years of studying as there are to become a doctor.”

3. Steve wants to be a chef. His favourite room in the house is the kitchen, where he spends most of the day. “I love cooking, especially for lots of people. I have over a hundred cook books.” He is going to work in a restaurant in Paris, where he hopes to learn how to prepare sauces. One day, he’d like to have his own restaurant.

4. Jane is studying marketing at university. She enjoys travelling, and would probably like to work for a tour company. “I’m not sure yet exactly what I want to do. After university, I’m going to take a year off, and I’m going round the world with another girl. We hope to find work on the way.”

5. Nick doesn’t know for certain what he will do. He says: “I think the best way to prepare myself for a future job is to get a good education. Jobs are changing and new ones are constantly appearing. In a few years, there will be many more new jobs and nobody knows yet what they will be.

Вариант 3 (Время выполнения: 10 минут)

Прочитай вопросы (1–6) и найди ответы на них в текстах (A–E). Каждый вопрос соответствует одному тексту, при этом один вопрос лишний. Занеси твои ответы в таблицу.

Questions:

1. What did the man begin watching?

2. What did the merchant give the sailor?

3. What do Welshmen like to do?

4. How many people are allowed to stand in the bus?

5. What people are called Cockney?

Texts:

A. The East End is especially famous as the centre of clothing industry in London. For centuries, people from abroad have come to find work there. Traditionally someone born in the East End is known as a Cockney, although this name is now given to anyone who speaks like a Londoner. Typically they change certain vowel sounds and, like some foreign learners of English, they have a few problems with “th” and say “f” instead.

B. I looked up. The fireworks had started. It was a very fine display. Sometimes the rockets went up singly, sometimes in a group. There were some which burst with a deafening crack and scattered out a rain of tiny golden stars, and others which opened with a soft sound and set out almost motionless in the air a configuration of big coloured lights. My neck was getting stiff watching.

C. One day, Robert Burns was walking near the docks. Suddenly he heard a cry for help. He ran towards the water. Just then a sailor jumped into the water. He saved the man who was calling for help. The man who was saved was a rich merchant. When he came to himself, he thanked the brave sailor and gave him a shilling. By this time a lot of people were standing round them. They called the sailor a hero while the rich man gave him only a shilling. But Burns stopped them and said, “Let him alone. The gentleman is the best judge of what his life is worth.”

D. There are two main kinds of buses in London: the red double-deckers and the single-deckers. The single-decker buses travel between the main stations and stop at fewer stops than the double-deckers. The double-deckers have seats for 65 people. Only five people are allowed to stand when the seats are full. So the conductor may stop you getting on the bus if there are five passengers already standing.

E. The Welsh are known in Great Britain for their singing. They like singing together. Choral singing is a national art. Every village has more than one choir. Welshmen sing everywhere – in competitions, on holidays, on a bus. People like to sing loudly. There are singing competitions in a festival of Welsh culture.

Вариант 1 (Время выполнения: 10–15 минут)

Прочитай текст и определи логическую последовательность его частей. Занеси в таблицу букву, соответствующую номеру выбранного тобой ответа.

A. So Great Britain and France were fighting for control of Canada until 1763. As a result, France signed a treaty giving up all its claims to land on the continent of North America. The French who were living in Canada did not return to France. They continued to follow the customs and religion of their native land. They became ‘French Canadians’.

B. Later, in 1534 the French king commissioned Jacques Cartier to find a water route to the Far East. Cartier made several voyages to the new World, and he tried to establish a colony on the banks of the St. Lawrence River (where Montreal is located today) but he failed. In 1608, Samuel de Champlain built the first permanent French settlement in Canada. He named it Quebec.

C. Since that time, millions of immigrants from the United States, Scotland, Ireland, England, Germany, Russia, Poland, Scandinavia, and other countries of the world have moved to Canada. Today about one third of the Canadians speak French and about two thirds speak English. English and French are both official languages of Canada.

D. Long before Europeans first came to America, many groups of Indians lived there. They hunted forest animals for food and clothing. They gathered berries and nuts in the forests. Many groups fished in the rivers and streams that flowed through the forests.

E. Both nations began to expand in the New World. English colonists began to settle along the Atlantic Coast. The French began to explore and build forts in the region south of the Great Lakes in the valleys of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

Hippies, punks, Goths, ravers, bikers. They may sit at separate tables in the cafeteria, but they all belong to the same generation. There are now 31 million kids in the 12-to-19 age group, and demographers predict that there will be 35 million teens by 2010. In many ways, these teens are uniquely privileged. They’ve grown up in a period of technological progress. Cable TV and the Internet have given them access to an almost infinite amount of information. Most expect to go to college, and girls, in particular, have unprecedented opportunities; they can dream of careers in everything from professional sports to politics, with plenty of female role models to follow.

But this positive image of teen life is a little like yearbook photos that depict every kid as happy and blemish-free. In survey after survey, many kids say they feel increasingly alone and alienated, unable to connect with their parents, teachers and sometimes even classmates. They’re looking for guidance, and when they don’t get what they need they join teens’ groups or subcultures.

2. The band, Athlete, however, are a rarity. They make music that I’ve never heard before and it sounds fantastic. There is a great selection of electronic trickery, squelchy noise and kooky beats. Despite exploring these electric sounds and styles, each tune is held together seamlessly.

3. Many animals are adapted to the weather, and where they are found is closely tied to the climate and its impact on the availability of suitable food. Over time, animals will also adapt to changes in the local climate.

The Royal Yacht Britannia has helped to make the Queen the most traveled monarch the world has ever known.
