II. Cluster Football
On the 5th of October we went to a cluster football match and our A team won and our B team lost but we were up against quite good players. We were quite disappointed about losing but very pleased that the A team won. People in the background were cheering for us.
We played at Symondsbury. It was a big field with a snack bar in the hut and we had juice and biscuits. We played against Symondsbury and Loders.
Powerstock A football team played Symondsbury A as our first match. The players were: Fred, Ben, Tom, Sam, Rhia, Becky and Ollie. Reserves were Emma, Bradie and Hattie. Bradie was swapped in and Becky went to sit on the sideline. It was a close match and everybody was cheering for us like mad. We were so confident that Ben, one of our top players, would score and when he did he did a lap of honour and got on with the match. It was one nil up and we were winning the match – the final score was one nil to us.
Nick was a fantastic goalie and was diving everywhere to save the goals. Everyone was cheering for him and so he had a boost of confidence and saved loads of goals. The B team had a real go to win the competition for Powerstock but Symondsbury won.

History of Polo

A. From Persia the game quickly spread to Arabia, China and India in the 13th century. It was in India, six centuries later, where the sport was played for the first time by Europeans.
B. America’s “golden age of polo” came during the 1920-30s: 80 polo clubs sprang up around the U.S., and club members included such popular figures as Walt Disney, Clark Gable and Will Rogers.
C. Polo became a mark of status, thereby earning the game the title of “The Sport of Kings.”
D. These early British polo players brought the sport back to England in 1869, and the game began its rapid ascent in popularity.

Polo is the oldest of all equestrian sports and according to some historians, the oldest organized sport of any kind. There are historical references to polo exist which date from the reign of Alexander the Great in the 4th Century B.C. The game probably originated with the early Persians, somewhere in present-day Iran. In its earliest form, polo was not played merely as a sport, but served as a training exercise for the Persian cavalry. At that time, the cavalry was comprised almost exclusively of nobles. (1)_____________.
As Alexander and other conquerors swept across Asia, they carried the game with them to the new lands they conquered – eventually as far away as Japan and Mongolia. The English term “polo” is derived from the Tibetan word pulu, which referred to a kind of root that polo balls were carved from. (2)______________.
British tea planters in India were the first Europeans known to have played the game. It soon became popular with the English military, colonists, and civil officials. (3)____________. Polo clubs sprang up around Britain and the rules began to be codified and standardized under the guidance of the famous Hurlingham Club.
The popularity of polo in America increased astonishingly through the first half of the 20th century. (4)________________. But, after World War II, American polo experienced a decline in popularity that it has never fully recovered from.
However, the sport still flourishes elsewhere in the world. Argentina was introduced to the game in the 1930s, and has developed something like a national mania for the game: Argentinean players have risen to become the premiere players in the polo world. The international order of precedence today in polo includes: Argentina, Mexico, U.S.A., England and Australia.
