PRESENTATION

Teacher: Good morning. I’m glad to see all of you here again. How did you spend the weekend? As for me, I spent some time watching a film. It is called “The Night Watch”. Have you seen the film? What do you think of it?

Student 1: Yes, I’ve seen the film and I’m sure it is a real hit. I think a lot of people watched it. It was rather difficult to get tickets. My friend and I had to stand in a long queue to buy tickets.

Student 2: In my opinion, the film is a bit boring and the plot is a real mess as it has very little in common with the book which it is based on.

Student 3: Oh, come off it! The film is great, it was even nominated for an Oscar, but unfortunately it wasn’t awarded one.

Teacher: Well, my pen-friend Joan has also watched the film (I sent her a DVD with my last letter to Great Britain) and said that it was difficult for her to understand it as she hadn’t read the book. And she also wrote what she thinks about cinema today and about her favourite film. Now let’s read an extract from her letter.

Cinema plays an important role in the life of any society. It is an easily available and popular form of art. Lots of people find going to the cinema one of the best ways of spending their leisure time. The movie audience is predominantly a young one.

Due to numerous video facilities, cinema attendances have declined sharply. But there is no denying the fact that the cinema-going habit is still a strong one.

No matter how large the place you live in is (whether it’s a big city or a small provincial town, or even a settlement) there’s most likely to be a cinema there.

There are such genres of feature films as the western, the thriller, the musical, the drama and the comedy; the performance lasts from two or three hours and most cinemas have at least 4 performances a day. There is no doubt that a good cinema show is an excellent entertainment and quite cheap. Of late cinema screens in this country have been dominated by films produced in the USA. And this tendency is growing.

As for me, I’m fond of going to the cinema. It’s a pity I don’t always have time for it. It’s an open secret that we live in a very difficult time now. But people do need something amusing and pleasant, something to laugh at. That’s why I give my preference to comedies. The last comedy I saw is “Crocodile Dundee”. The film tells about amusing adventures of a young lovely woman reporter and a strong and brave crocodile hunter. At first, their relations were not friendly. She even looked down on him and he in return neglected her. But after he rescued her out of some difficult situations, their relations became more friendly. A happy end is an essential feature of American films. The same is true of this comedy. The main characters fall in love with each other at the end of the film.

Then students and the teacher discuss the extract by asking and answering questions about the content.

GROUP WORK

Speaking

You are asked to do a kind of research work for the teenage magazine “Cool”. You should find out if cinema and TV are popular with young people your age.
Ask your friends.

– if they are cinema goers (fond of going to the cinema)
– how often they go to the cinema
– what films they prefer to watch
– if they watch videos at home
– what films they saw last
– if they watch TV; how often; how long;
– what their favourite programmes are

Listening Exercises

Teacher: When we don’t have time to look into a cinema booking-office to learn what is on or don’t have a newspaper at hand, it is natural to call to a cinema house to get a recorded message about the films.
Now let’s listen to a recorded message you might get if you call to an information office of a cinema house in Great Britain.
While listening try to complete the notes in order not to forget the information.

Typescript 2

Malcolm: So, Christine, what did you think of the film?

Christine: Yes, but the whole film was really good. I mean the dialogue was very clever.

Malcolm: That’s true. But the plot was a bit silly.

Christine: That’s not the point. The situation was very funny. For me, Julia Roberts was absolutely fantastic in the film. She’s an amazing actress, isn’t she?

Malcolm: Yeah ... but Hugh Grant always plays the same part. You know, the shy Englishman.

Situation Card 4

(Reading and Speaking)

Imagine that you are taking part in a survey, the aim of which is to make a Ten Top Leading Actors list. Speak about your favourite actor and prove that he/she is really the best. Please, read the story about Kevin Costner first in order to see how to organize your speech and make it more impressive and convincing.

Kevin Costner, an Actor and a Producer

Kevin Costner, a famous American actor, was born in Los Angeles. He spent his childhood often on the move, changing schools frequently, owing to his father’s job at the regional electricity company. As a teenager, he developed a keen liking for football, baseball and basketball and was also interested in singing and writing poetry.
He married his college sweetheart, Cindy Wilts, still at California State University and came out with a business degree in marketing. In his spare time he appeared in local theatre productions. Theatre became increasingly important to him and after having worked six weeks in a marketing company, he gave the job up to become an actor.
He played many small roles before his principle role which was not a success. However Costner himself was given good reviews. In 1987 his starring role in “The Untouchables” and “No Way Out” really introduced him to international fame. Indeed, he won the Star of Tomorrow prize from the U. S. National Association of Theatre Owners. Then in 1988 came “Bull Durham” which was a huge hit movie in the States about baseball. His subsequent film “Field of Dreams” was also a success and touched baseball again. Then came the violent drama movie “Revenge” followed by his first directorial debut film “Dances With Wolves” in which he also starred and which won 7 Oscars. His movie “Robin Hood, Prince of the Thieves” was also a great success.
I like this actor because the characters he plays are strong personalities, wise people who are worthy of my admiration. In my opinion, this is the reason of his growing popularity in many, countries. He is not only a talented actor, whose acting draws your attention from the very moment you see his face on the screen, but he is also a successful producer and continues working at his new films which are certain to amuse people.

Situation Card 5
(Reading and Speaking)

Imagine that you present a program on the radio that is called “Film News” where you tell your listeners about new films, which have appeared on the screen recently. You tell people about the plot, the actors and give your opinion about the film. Please, read the story first in order to make your program and your speech more impressive, colourful and attractive for listeners.

My Favourite Film

Last Tuesday I saw the film “Romeo and Juliet” based on Shakespeare’s play. The stars were perfect. Romeo was played by Leonardo DiCaprio.
And I’ll try to tell you about this film. In the town of Verona there were two rich families, the Capulets and the Montagues. There was an old quarrel between those two families. One day the Capulets had a great supper. At that supper Romeo saw Juliet and fell in love with her at once. Juliet had the same feelings. Romeo asked Juliet to marry him. She agreed, but nobody knew about their plan. The next day Romeo and Juliet came to the Friar and he married them.
Some days passed and Juliet’s father told her that she was to marry a young man whose name was Paris. Juliet didn’t know what to do. But the Friar helped her. He gave her medicine and told her to go home and be ready to marry Paris. But when she drank that medicine she will sleep for forty-two hours.
Juliet did as the Friar told her. Juliet’s parents thought that she was dead and put her in the family tomb. When Romeo heard that Juliet was dead he bought some poison and went to the tomb of the Capulets. Paris was there and Romeo killed him.
Then Romeo kissed Juliet on the lips and drank his poison. At this moment Juliet woke up and saw that the young man was dead. Juliet took a dagger that was on the floor and killed herself.

Situation Card 6
(Reading, Speaking and Writing)

Imagine that you work for the magazine Entertainment Weekly, which deals with the world of films and music. You were asked to write an article, a film review. This article is very important for you because if the editor likes it, you will be promoted. Please, work with the review first in order to learn how to write them.

If you do everything correctly, your editor will have to keep his promise!

Beauty and the Beast (1946)

A Film Review

A. “Beauty and the Beast” was directed by Jean Cocteau. It is based on the fairy tale by Madame Le Prince de Beaumont and it stars Jean Marais as the Beast and Josette Day as Beauty.

B. Beauty is one of three daughters of a French merchant. Her sisters, Felicie and Adelaide, are mean and treat Beauty as a servant. (1)________ Beauty’s father gets lost in the forest, but finds a strange castle. (2) _________ he enters, looking for help. The owner of the castle is a repulsive monster, half-man, half-beast, (3)________ threatens the merchant – either one of his daughters replaces him as a prisoner in the castle or the father will die. Beauty offers to replace her father and goes to live in the castle. (4)________, she discovers the Beast is not as hideous and inhuman as he seems, but a handsome prince.

C. The film deals with the theme of appearances in very interesting and clever ways. In one memorable scene, Beauty looks in the mirror and her face is transformed into the Beast’s. For its time (1946), the film uses some clever special effects, (5)________ when Beauty is striding up and down waiting for the Beast to visit her room – behind her, a statue’s head follows her movements! (6)_________, the whispering furniture is as frightening as anything in modern films... The film does, (7) _________, have its weak points. The Beast’s voice is rather squeaky, and the lovers flying at the end is a bit corny! (8)_______, though, it must be one of the most beautiful films ever made. (9)_________ it is in black and white, the striking use of light makes it seem at times like a moving painting. The music is also magnificent.

D. Beauty and the Beast is a fairy tale with an obvious message – you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. (10)_____, it has neither the cute characters nor the Hollywood songs of the Disney version; it speaks to people of all ages. I recommend it for all the family.

1. Read the film review and match paragraphs A–D with the following headings in order to clarify its structure.

  • Good and bad points

  • Basic information about the film

  • Conclusion and recommendation

  • Brief summary of the plot

2. Look through the review again and fill in the gaps with the following words. These words will help you to make your review more organized, logical and impressive.

Words: although, of course, one day, who, which, however, in the end, all things considered, such as, moreover

Key: 1. One day; 2. Which; 3. who; 4. In the end; 5. such as; 6. Moreover; 7. however; 8. All things considered; 9. Although; 10. Of course

Fans, journalists

H.: Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to our studio! Today in our “Everything about…” series we are going to talk about “The Lord of the Rings” which is considered to be the film of the century!
Meet the team which presented us such a miracle!

Ведущий представляет гостей.

H.: We are waiting for questions from the audience and our viewers. Our contact phone number is 55-66-00. My first question is for Peter Jackson. How do you feel about the film?

P.J.: My idea about “The Lord of the Rings” is this: I’m sure that all events of the book took place in real life. I mean this feeling appears when you finish reading it. And that’s why I consider these films more as historical thеn as fantasy ones. I wouldn’t have dared to create such a film, if it weren’t “The Lord of the Rings”. The world of the book is so wonderful, exciting and charming, that I think it is worth spending 3.5 years of my life on.

H.: Oh, we have a question from the audience.

J.: Peter, was it difficult for you to deal with young and unexperienced actors?

P.J.: First of all, I can’t say they’re unexperienced. Elijah, for example, has taken part in about 8 films and worked with such masters as Kevin Costner and Mel Gibson.
I remember that several days after the beginning we were shooting a scene where hobbits entered a city inhabited by humans. These creatures, no taller than a metre, found themselves among gigantic men and women. Elijah looked so frightened and stunned that I really believed he was a creature twice as short as normal people.

E.W.: Thanks, Peter. As for me, it was wonderful to work with Peter and the others. Peter was ready to listen to all ideas and we had meetings where we discussed scenes and characters. Our ideas were taken into consideration and we felt a part of the process.

V.M.: I met a lot of friends here, and especially I found much in common with Sean Beane, Orlando Bloom. The members of our Fellowship even made a tattoo, it is an Elvish number “nine”, and we were supposed to keep it secret, but someone let the cat from the bag.
Actually, I suspect Frodo, he’s a bit talkative.

E.W.: Oh, it wasn’t me! Don’t get at me, I’m a poor hobbit, and all these tall people…

O.B.: Well, and every time like this! As for me, it was a great honour to work together with such Masters as Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Ian Holm. It was the time of fantastic non-stop nightmare, we all were charmed by the book and turned into a crowd of Tolkien fans and it was wonderful.

Fan: My question is to Sir McKellen. You are considered to be a highbrow actor. How did you come to Hollywood?

I.M.: Well, I’ve played a lot of parts in the theatre and on TV: Macbeth, King Lear, Adolf Hitler, poet John Keats, even Russian tsar Nicolas the Second, but Hollywood producers thought that I’m too great for their films! (Laughs) But sometimes they turned for help when they couldn’t do themselves, for example, I took part in “Gods and Monsters” and was even nominated for an Oscar! But they’ve spoilt me! Look, where I am filming now: the X-men! (Laughs)

Fan: Do you mean you regret that you’ve played the part of Gandalf?

I.M.: Oh never, not at all! It was a chance to try something new. I’m really fascinated with Gandalf’s character: wise, strong-willed, kind, experienced.

J.: My question is to Orlando. Why did you decide to be an actor?

O.B.: I wanted to become an actor when I was nine. At that time I was in love with a very pretty girl and I dreamed to fly and rescue her from something terrible. When I learned that Superman was an actor, my first thought was: “It is for me!” So I can say that I became an actor because of beautiful women.

H.: Well, about beautiful women. Peter, how did you manage to find your Princess of Elves?

P.J.: Actually, it took us a long time to find an actress for this role. I said to myself: “I need an actress more beautiful and perfect than an ordinary woman”. When I saw Liv, I understood that my dream had come true. I was looking for an actress with such a nature, who is able to understand the princess who fell in love with a mortal man and refused eternal life for the sake of love.

Fan: Liv, you are extremely beautiful!

L.T.: Thanks!

Fan: You were the most popular girl at school, weren’t you?

L.T.: Oh, strange as it may seems but no! I was considered to be the ugliest girl in my class. My classmates teased me and called ‘liver sausage’. I often cried and my gran says that I came home all in tears. All my family tried to console me but I was in despair. Actually, I don’t like to remember my school life.

H.: Liv, you had to learn a lot of things for the film, didn’t you?

L.T.: Yes, I learnt to ride a horse, speak Elvish and fight with swords. It wasn’t easy, but it was extremely interesting!

H.: Did you have any problems with communicating with your partners? Did you quarrel?

L.T.: Oh, of course, not! From this point of view the work was rather easy. But all of us were very tired.

V.M.: I agree, I got tired so much that I had some sort of hallucination. I really believed that Liv was the Princess of Elves.

J.R.-D.: As for me, I think we would have done nothing with the film, if it weren’t for two people – Peter and Viggo.

E.W.: Viggo was a real source of inspiration for all of us, and an example of a real professional. Even when we had days off, he took a horse and went practicing.

(V.M. looks very confused)

V.M.: Thanks but actually I could have done nothing without you.

H.: John, and how do you feel about the film?

J.R.-D.: Well, it was great, but unfortunately, I had a lot of problems with make-up, a false beard and all that stuff. I had some sort of allergy and the skin on my face was badly hurt. I had to wait for 2–3 days before making the next shot.

H.: Unfortunately, dear guests, audience and viewers, the time of our program is over. Thank you for having been with us. Next time we are meeting with the Famous Three: Daniel Radcliff, Emma Watson and Rupert Grant! Send your questions and welcome to our studio! Watch us on Channel 5, on Saturday, 27, at 17.00.
Bye and see you!
