The Loch Ness Monster

Chapter 1

Carol McKenzie is a little girl. She lives in the north of Great Britain, in Scotland. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. But Carol doesn’t live in Edinburgh; she lives in a small village with her mummy and daddy.
There are a lot of lakes in Scotland. The Scottish call them lochs. The deepest loch is Loch Lomond, but the most famous is Loch Ness. It is said that a monster lives there. So Carol lives in a small house on a hill near Loch Ness.

NOTE

Loch Ness is a long, narrow lake in the highland area of Scotland. It forms part of the Caledonian Canal. It extends in a northeastern direction for about 39 km. The average width of the lake is about 2 km. and the greatest depth is about 230 m.

Chapter 2

Carol’s father, Mr. McKenzie is a shepherd. He has got a big flock of sheep*. Scottish sheep are famous all over the world for their fine wool.

Carol is a nice girl. She does not go to school yet, but she helps her father with the sheep with great pleasure. She takes the sheep down to Loch Ness every day and brings them back in the evening.

NOTE

Внимание! В английском языке слово sheep не имеет окончания “S” во множественном числе – one sheep (одна овечка) – a lot of sheep (много овец)

Chapter 3

One day Carol saw strange footprints on the shore of the lake. She could not understand what animal it was. “It is very big. It is not a sheep, it is not a cow, and it is not a horse. What is it?” the girl was curious. She wanted to know what that animal was.
Carol came home and asked her father: “Daddy, are there elephants in Scotland?” “No, no, my dear, there are no elephants in Scotland,” laughed the father. “Elephants live far away in Africa,” said Mr. McKenzie.

Chapter 4

Carol did not tell her father about the strange footprints. But she went to the barn to count her flock of sheep. Carol counted again and again. She tried several times. But one sheep was not there! It was lost! The next day when Carol came back home she counted her sheep again. “How terrible!” thought the girl. “What can I tell my parents? Now two sheep are lost!”
The next day Carol walked to the lake as usual but she decided to find out who took her sheep. She hid behind the tree and watched. The sheep ate the grass and went to the lake to drink.
Suddenly Carol saw a big bubble. It came out of the water. Carol could hardly believe her eyes. A strange big animal with two large eyes, a long neck and a huge mouth appeared on the surface of the lake. “It’s a monster,” shouted Carol. “It can eat me”.

Chapter 5

Carol was scared. The monster came out of the water. It opened its mouth, picked up a sheep and went into the lake. Carol ran from behind the tree and shouted: “Stop! Stop! Don’t take my sheep.” The beast turned around and looked at the girl. “I am not afraid of you, big elephant,” said Carol. The monster was surprised. “I am not an elephant,” said he. “I am not afraid of you, big giraffe,” continued Carol. “But I am not a giraffe,” said the monster. “I am not afraid of you, whoever you are!” “I am a Loch Ness monster. My name is Nessie and I live in this lake. I am very lonely. I have no friends”, and Nessie began to cry.

Chapter 6

“I am very sorry. I took your sheep only to play with, but they did not want to play with me.” Carol came to the monster, patted him on the back and said: “Don’t cry Nessie. I will be your friend. I will come to the lake every day and we’ll play.”

At home Carol told everything to her parents, but how could they believe her story! They decided it was only Carol’s imagination.

The next day Carol went to the lake again. Nessie was so glad to see his new friend again. They played different games. Carol taught the monster to play hide-and-seek and Nessie taught her to swim.

Chapter 7

One day Carol said: “Nessie, I want you to meet my parents, they are very kind. They will like you.” “Oh, no, Carol. I cannot go with you. I can’t live on the land. I can spend only few hours here, because I can’t breathe the air. My house is my lake. But I want you come every day and to be my friend. I have never had friends like you in my life.” “All right,” said Carol.
Every day Carol met her friend. But one day a boy who lived nearby came to the lake. His name was Jim. He was very naughty. When he saw Carol playing with the monster, he was terrified first. But then he decided to go home to bring a camera and to take pictures of the animal and to make it a great sensation. He came home and told everybody about Nessie.

Chapter 8

On Sunday a lot of people came to Loch Ness to see the monster. The day was foggy and windy. There were big waves on the lake. Soon Nessie appeared on the surface. He was surprised to see a lot of people on the shore. But Carol cried: “Go away, go away, they want to put you in the Zoo.” Nessie did not want to be put in the Zoo, so he quickly disappeared.

Chapter 9

The pictures that Jim made were very unclear. Nobody believed that there was a monster in them. Everybody thought that it was just a big wave.
Nessie never came out when there were many people on the shore. Only when Carol came alone to the lake, Nessie came again. The girl and the beast played together and were very happy. Carol kept their friendship a secret from everybody. She wanted her friend to be free and happy.
