“The Return” («Месть»)

25-year-old Joanna Mills is having strange visions, the result of which she cuts herself with a knife and in which she sees places where she has never been before. In search of truth, the woman goes to La Salle town, where many years ago a woman was killed.

Being honest, I only waited for this movie so long because of one thing – the main character is played by my favorite actress – Sarah Michelle Gellar, who spent 7 years fighting with the forces of darkness in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” TV-Series. She’s not leaving the horror genre yet, where she is almost a queen, but this project is a definitely a wrong step for her.

Everything in ‘The Return’ is shamelessly primitive: the plot, decoration, and characters. The movie calls itself a mystical thriller, but there is hardly any mysticism going on, and no reason to be scared to death: I mean there are a couple of frightening scenes (which by the way are totally different from tortures in “Saw” and “Hostel” movies, which are good), but they can hardly impress the experienced experts of a genre. The acting is quite entertaining, but this is definitely Sarah Michelle’s contribution – even in a totally badly-written character of Joanna she finds a field to display her talent, and in the end her acting is the only plus of this overextended and boring movie, that had no point in being made.
