TABLE MANNERS

You know that the English people are famous for being very polite. There is a set of table manners below. You can make the rules more polite by using “Please”, “You should” or “You shouldn’t”. Try to do it!

I.

A. Make these rules more polite using “You should” or “Please”.

1. Hold your fork in the left hand and your knife in the right hand when you eat.

2 Wash your hands with soap before breakfast, dinner, tea and supper.

3. First pass things (bread, butter, salt, pepper, water, a spoon, and a knife...) to your neighbour, and then take some yourself.

4. Take a slice of bread from the bread plate with your hand.

5. Say “No, thank you,” when you don’t want any more.

6. Offer to help clear the table and wash up the dishes after a meal when you are visiting a family.

7. Cut meat into small pieces, one piece at a time.

8. Put your spoon on the saucer. It is not polite to leave a spoon in a tea cup.

B. Make the same rules strict using “You must”.

II.

A. Make these rules more polite using: “You shouldn’t” or “Please”.

1. Don’t sit down at the table with dirty hands.

2. Don’t forget to say “Please” when you ask somebody to pass you something.

3. Don’t forget to say “Thank you” when somebody passes you something.

4. Don’t talk with your mouth full.

5. Don’t talk when you eat.

6. Don’t put your elbows on the table.

7. Don’t eat your soup making noise, so that everybody can hear you.

8. Don’t take your bread with a fork.

9. Don’t blow on your tea when it is too hot.

10. Don’t play with your knife or spoon.

11. Don’t use a spoon for what you can eat with a fork.

12. Don’t use a knife for fish, cutlets or omelettes.

13. Don’t put the knife into your mouth.

15. Don’t make faces to show that you don’t like something.

Please remember, if you use “You mustn’t” instead of “You shouldn’t” you will sound rude!

B. To the set of rules above add five very strict rules using “Must”.
C. Add five very polite rules using “Please” or “Should” (“Shouldn’t”).
