CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

Developing Vocabulary

How to make a student learn so many new words? That is a question for every English teacher. There has been a trend in recent years to concentrate on more student-centred activities. I think it makes the student more responsible for his own learning. Everybody knows that most people learn by doing; that is why I try to use vocabulary activities at my lesson. My opinion is to help my students not only to know and use new items, but to see their relations with other words in the language.

THE GRIDS. They help the students to see not only one word but also its relations with the others. Working on the topic “Professions” (Unit 10, Happy English-1) the students have found not only new words concerning professions, but also the place of work and duties of each profession.

I think it was a creative task for them because they had seen not only the separate words but the relations between them. Each student eagerly tried to find as many words as he could.

Working with the verbs “make” and “do” (Happy English-2, p.l09 by T. Klementyeva) I made a questionnaire. This is a controlled practice activity with a communicative aim. It also revises the “Household Activity” vocabulary.

Level: Intermediate.

Procedure: Pre-teach the difference between the verbs “make” and “do”.

I ask the students to put questions, using the verbs “make” or “do”. I think such lessons are not boring and they provide good practive using the appropriate verb.

I would like to suggest some interesting games I use at my lessons.

“Desert Island”

Aim: speaking

Language: imagination, fun

Level: beginners, intermediate

Time: 10-15 minutes

“Imagine you are on a desert island in the Atlantic Ocean. You have only a dress and that is all. There is food and water on the island but nothing else. Here is a list of things you may find useful. Choose the most useful things from your point of view.”

a box of matches, a mirror, a map, a radio, a camera, a saucepan, a knife, a blanket, a tent, a watch, a pencil, a paper, aspirin, a gun

Students work in pairs for about 6-8 minutes. After that they read the lists of words they have chosen.

ex. We need a box of matches to make a fire.

ex. We need a map to find the place where we are.

ex. We need a saucepan to cook.

I think this game practices interactive language because the students agree or disagree and compare things.

“Changes in Our Life”

Aims: speaking

Language: practice in using the Present Perfect Tense

Level: intermediate

Time: 5-10 minutes

I describe to the students some interesting facts that have happened in my life and in the world

ex. I have visited Great Britain.

ex. Playing with computer has become the most popular hobby.

ex. I have married.

I ask the students to make up their own sentences about the most important changes that have taken place in their lives.

ex. I have seen the film “Titanic”.

ex. I have been to Moscow.

ex. My father has bought a car.
